Reduce your risk
Practice safer sex by taking these steps to protect yourself and your sexual partner(s) from STDs.
Use condoms
Consistent and correct use of latex condoms significantly reduces the risk of STD transmission. If you have a latex allergy, synthetic non-latex condoms can be used. However, be aware that non-latex condoms can break more often than latex condoms. Use a condom every time you have anal, vaginal, or oral sex. How to Use an External Condom (CDC).
Get vaccinated
Although there are no vaccines for chlamydia and gonorrhea, there are vaccines for hepatitis B and HPV. Vaccines are a safe and effective way to prevent these serious diseases, so make sure you are up to date with your vaccinations. Talk to your doctor about your vaccination status.
Regular testing
Knowing your STD status is an important step to prevent the spread of STDs. You and your partner(s) should make a plan to get tested and share your results. The best time to talk about getting tested is before you start having sex (including oral).
Reducing the number of sexual partners you have also decreases your risk for STDs.
