Volunteer Position Description

Hours: Various Temporary Seasonal 30-40 Hours/week, April-October
Location: Lake Elmo Park Reserve or St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park

Camp hosts live onsite at the campground. Camp hosts will work closely with Parks staff to maintain campground facilities and grounds, communicate with Parks staff and local law enforcement regarding safety or security issues, and ensure a welcoming camping experience for our guests.

Camp hosts must have the ability to live onsite in a camping unit during scheduled workdays and must supply their own hard-sided recreational vehicle. A photo and description of the camping unit must be supplied for final approval by the Guest Services Supervisor (or designee). A full-hook up campground site is provided for camp hosts at no cost to the camp hosts during their scheduled volunteer period.

Camp hosts must also have the ability to work a varied schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays. Due to the inherent nature of living in the campground, hosts may respond to situations or emergencies outside of their scheduled volunteer hours. Camp hosts must also be prepared to work outdoors in all weather (extreme heat, rain).

Exact shift times will vary. However, camp hosts will need to be available to work between 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m., seven days per week. The typical work schedule is seven consecutive workdays, followed by seven days off. Camp hosts are scheduled from late April to mid-October. A minimum commitment of eight weeks is required, unless upon written request and approval.

Please note that pets are not allowed in the campgrounds. Alcohol is also not permitted in the campground.

Duties and Responsibilities

Camp hosts are responsible for providing outstanding customer service to park guests.

These examples do not include all possible tasks assigned and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in this position. Regular attendance according to the approved volunteer schedule is required.

Provide high quality customer service to ensure visitors receive accurate and appropriate information in a welcoming, inclusive, and timely manner.
Greet and interact with visitors at assigned locations and facilities.

2. Inform park visitors of park procedures and policies.
3. Provide information about park facilities and regional attractions.
Provide support in the operation of the campground in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and the rules established by the Washington County Parks Division.
Provide custodial support in a responsive manner, including campsites and restrooms, and notify Parks maintenance of facility repair, maintenance, and supply needs.
Ensure safety and security of the campground facility.
1. Work with Parks staff to educate visitors about the Park Ordinance.
2. Notify and work with local law enforcement when necessary.
Comply with all campground and park policies and procedures as established by Washington County Parks.
Operate golf cart, hand tools, and other mechanical devices safely.
Perform other related duties as apparent or assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to stay on-site in a camping unit during scheduled days on duty.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Must complete a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

Six months of work experience in the campground, camping and/or customer service industry/hospitality industry.
Experience working with diverse populations.

Work Environment

Duties are performed inside and outside County buildings inside the Park. Duties and responsibilities could require some physical exertion such as long periods of walking, standing, crouching, or riding over rough, uneven terrain.

Camp hosts must have the physical ability to bend, twist, crouch, lift, forward & overhead reach, and push/pull facility equipment, such as: full 5-gallon buckets, firewood bundles, or similar equipment which may weigh up to 30 pounds.

This position involves operating County equipment including a golf cart or similar vehicle. There may be intermittent exposure to varied weather conditions that occasionally necessitates the use of rain gear, gloves, etc.
